This comes from a post (which turned into an essay) I made in a forum I frequent directed at some friends of mine who luuuurv Twilight. Now, these are university students, so they have some sense and actually responded pretty well to it, laughing and saying they actually agreed with me, but they still enjoy the story. Thank god, I was afraid I’d have tears and attacks, the way that some of these 13 year old fan girls seem to be these days. The obsessive dedication of the Twilight fandom frightens me, and that’s coming from a hard core Whedonite. We Whedon fans are rabid, but rarely physical. So, I felt that I had to at least see Twilight to understand it, and my response is posted below. No, being a forum post, it’s not in typical list format and hasn’t really been edited, so its not up to the “literary standards” (HA!) that I normally keep buffylists, but oh wells, I thought it was worth re-posting on here to see if any other die-hard Buffy fans agree with me.

5 Interesting “Fanons” in the Buffyverse Fanfic Community
October 13, 2008I know I haven’t updated in over a month. School’s hard and stuff. After writing 10+ page lab reports a week on top of school and work, this site has not been my first priority. Bite me. That doesn’t mean I haven’t thought about posts I could make in the meantime. Here’s one of the shorter ones.

I’ve been reading Buffy fanfiction for many years now, but incredibly periodically. One thing I do notice is that the fanfiction community has seemed to carve out its own reality in terms of the Buffyverse that mirrors but differs slightly from details in the show. These details may be small and insignificant, but what happens is its written into one story, which is read by many other ficcers, who unknowingly incorporate it into their fic and soon the entire community believes something happened in the show when it never really did. These are called “Fanon” (fan-canon). While reading this webpage that summarizes several canon vs. fanon, I thought the following common mistakes in fanfiction are worth note to all you fanficcers out there.

5 Reasons Why Sunnydale Is NOT a “one Starbucks town”
August 18, 2008Sunnydale is one Hellmouth of a town (ahahaha…ok, not funny). It’s the perfect horror-movie cliche of the quiet little innocent town which is either secretly or eventually overrun by vampires, demons and/or the forces of darkness. With all that brewing in and beneath the ridiculously expansive sewer system, stats like Sunnydale (pop. < 40,000) being home to 42 churches and 12 cemeteries seem about right.
However, early on in the series (re: Welcome to the Hellmouth aka the Pilot), Xander establishes that “not much goes on in a one Starbucks little town like Sunnydale.” Maybe it was because Xander didn’t get out much or read the local news, maybe it was because he was just so lovebly naive back in the day, or maybe it was a throwaway line in an episode that has its continuity shattered again and again as the series progresses. But if you watch the whole series, I mean really watch it with a magnifying glass, you may find subtle details that seem to contradict that very statement. Or, if you have optical nerves which connect to your brain, you may notice these 5 pieces of evidence that hilariously fly in the face of Xander’s claim.

Angel: After the Fall #13 Cover. OMFG!
August 14, 2008I’ve fallen in love with Alex Garner’s covers for the last few Angel: After the Fall Issues. But he has recently posted the cover for numero 13 on his Deviant Art account…and if you have any appreciation for Illyria and the Fred/Illyria dynamic, you’ll definitely appreciate this one.
Wow.
(I’ll be getting back to the lists ASAP)

6 Badass Normal Humans (you don’t want to piss off)
August 12, 2008The Buffyverse is filled to the brim with supernatural ass-kickers, from Slayers to Vampires to Demons to Witches. However, there are also a solid amount of humans with no demons or magics but are still quite able when it comes to holding their own in a fight. And they don’t even have to turn green for you to know that you wouldn’t like them when they’re angry.
Following are the characters who don’t need flashy lights or superspeed to demand respect from an opponent.

The 7 Best Seasons of Buffy
August 12, 2008Ok, so there are only 7 seasons of Buffy. Well, technically 8 now with the comics, but as it is a) A comic book and b) incomplete, I feel it’s best to compare the television series. Besides, there are no “bad” seasons of Buffy, just seasons that are better than others. I decided to start out with a list that’s both obvious and requires some serious analysis. Expect a similar list for Angel to follow, though not immediately (this takes alot longer than it looks).
In ranking the seasons, I took the following into account: overall plot, series-changing moments, quality of stand-alones, quality of key episodes, and season finales.
Or check out my other blogs or my fanfiction. But, like I said, looking at the my list of lists…I wont be running out of Buffy things to list any time soon. My god.
